AGENDA

July 9, 2024 Accessibility Advisory Committee

HISTORY

The Accessible British Columbia Act (ABCA), was passed in June 2021 for the purpose of supporting the identification, removal and prevention of barriers faced by people with disabilities in BC. The ABCA requires municipal governments to establish an Accessibility Advisory Committee, a public feedback program and an Accessibility Plan that includes principles of inclusion, adaptability, diversity, collaboration, self-determination and universal design. Council has approved the Terms of Reference for the Accessibility Advisory Committee, a committee to support the District in developing a municipal Accessibility Plan. The purpose of the Accessibility Plan is to outline strategies to identify, remove, and prevent barriers faced by people with disabilities that interact with the District of Lantzville. Barriers can be attitudinal, physical, information-based, systemic, technological, sensory, etc.

The District of Lantzville is now accepting applications for five (5) more volunteer members-at-large to serve on its new Accessibility Advisory Statutory Committee for a term expiring December 31, 2024. Meetings will be held a minimum of three (3) times per year in the Council Chamber on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm, or at an alternate start time by unanimous consent of the Committee. Additional meetings may be held, also by unanimous consent.

The Accessibility Advisory Committee will consist of up to seven (7) voting members appointed by Council, and non-voting staff appointed by the CAO. Check out the TERMS OF REFERENCE for the Accessibility Advisory Committee for a full description of how the committee will operate, criteria for Council to appoint up to six Lantzville residents as members-at-large, meeting schedule, etc. Note: Despite s. 5.1.2, the option to hold the meetings electronically via Zoom is currently not available.

To be considered for appointment by Council to the Accessibility Advisory Statutory Committee, please complete and submit this application form as soon as possible to: Director of Corporate Administration, District of Lantzville, 7192 Lantzville Road, PO Box 100, Lantzville, BC V0R 2H0 or accessibility@lantzville.ca.
