Beginning October 1, 2010, the District will be moving forward with a change in both service provider and collection methods. Joining the Regional District of Nanaimo in their ‘zero waste’ initiative, the District of Lantzville and neighbouring member municipalities will be introducing the collection of food waste (in addition to garbage and recycling). The introduction of collecting food waste will result in changes to “when” and “what” is collected each week: organic food waste will be collected every week with garbage and recycling being collected on alternate weeks, for example …

  • week 1 - organic food waste & garbage
  • week 2 - organic food waste & recycling
  • week 3 - organic food waste & garbage
  • week 4 - organic food waste & recycling

In addition to the above, the collection schedule will also change and residents will find themselves on an ‘add a day’ schedule which means that if there is a holiday on any day in that particular week your collection day will move ahead. It may sound somewhat confusing but schedules will be provided prior to this change being implemented and keeping your schedule on hand should make the date changes relatively easy to follow.

The District will be conducting a variety of information sessions, media releases and educational materials as we approach the October 1st date. In the interim, we would encourage residents to visit the RDN’s website at rdnfoodwaste.ca to view detailed information on the collection program and the successful pilot projects conducted in neighbouring jurisdictions.
